Tulum ancient ruins
The imposing Tulum ancient ruins sit right on the edge of the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea. Built as a seaport fortress atop 15 metre-high cliffs, the ruins are where Tulum takes its name of ‘wall’ in Mayan, although the town’s original name was Zamá – ‘place of the dawning sun’. It’s here that you’ll get a feel for Tulum’s former status as a gateway connecting the Yucatán Peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico with modern-day Central America.
