Mérida colonial town
Mérida is the inland capital of Yucatán, an understated city full of bright colours from the colonial homes and a fascinating combination of Mayan, Spanish, French, British and Lebanese influences. Head to the Catedral de San Ildefonso (one of the oldest in the Americas) to hire a horse-drawn caleche if you feel like taking a back-seat. Soak up the atmosphere at the central Lucas de Gálvez market, try cochinita pibil tacos from street food vendors and hit a Mezcalería for cocktails at dusk.
